Wealthier societies usually acquire more checks on social conduct. That's what would seem apparent from looking at the modern world anyway. Certain sexual taboos have been done away with but pedophilia for one is pretty taboo when previously it was common . In a way you could argue that an average urban Westerner is expected to think, act and talk in a certain manner without which he would be ostracized by their society. Comparatively for us the rules are far more relaxed, we can easily be Islamophobic or w/e but if we start being casteist openly then we too would get btfo by our society. Poorfags don't have to give a single fuck, they can start riots with FB posts. The 'every man for himself' ideology definitely isn't very popular in the modern Golden Age, it seems decadents mostly stick to collectivism. There are more Gommies and Fascists in the decadent West than libertarians, who btw were the majority back when places like the US were being built up. '

Lmao. Yes, they had mellowed out from the 7th century but they still weren't liberal in any manner. Their fundamental social structure remained. A polygamous aristocratic large slave worked plantation owning population isn't liberal. Also, the thing you linked just talks about how Islam was more progressive than pre Islamic Arabia.

But this isn't what happened, anon. What happened was a bunch of generalissimos got to call themselves kings and play war over the corpse of the Empire every year. This, along with other international changes, killed internal trade and commerce and wrecked the Vaishyas. That's what killed us, the destruction of our productive, entrepreneurial class and the shameful delight with which the two ruling classes pounced to ensure it never built itself up again. Free trade India(Gupta) was literally best India.
You're talking about urban planning problems, not innate problems with the free market model. The free market does have ups and downs, yes, but even after a nation has stopped growing and even with nations that fall into the middle income trap life is much better than it was prior to free markets. We could go into a 2% recession for 15 years now and we'd still be better off than we were before 90.
Also, those cities still support millions who'd be otherwise jobless, and millions more stream in every year knowing what the cities are like already so despite the decline in QoL they're obviously worth it. And no, living in the countryside isn't comfier. I have relatives who live in the countryside, they are even somewhat better off than their neighbours but they are still depressingly poor. Genuinely, every time I go there, it's like this black haze falls over me, the kind of gloomy vibe you get from reading Poe.
The suicide rate thing probably just has to do with the nature of work that people in richer states do. White collar workers generally take much more mental stress than labourers, some professions(lawyers for one) are much more likely to seppuku than others. They simply have more white collar workers than us. If you compared Indians with an income above 12lpa with Americans I don't think there'd be much of a difference in suicide rates. Poors don't suicide because they are too stupid to think.
